Queensland has the potential to become a bioenergy powerhouse
For over a century, sugarcane has been the backbone of Queensland’s agriculture, shaping our communities and supporting generations of growers.
Today, our industry thrives as Queensland's second largest agricultural export, contributing $4 billion to the economy and providing over 20,000 jobs. But even more exciting opportunities lie ahead.
A new era is dawning, where sugarcane takes the lead in the bioeconomy revolution. Imagine a future where sugarcane powers low-emission air travel, lights up homes with green electricity, and creates sustainable biofuels and bioplastics, replacing fossil fuels—all while supporting our farming families and strengthening regional communities.
With the right government policies, we can unlock sugarcane’s full potential, creating thousands of new jobs, and helping Australia meet its greenhouse gas reduction goals, all while maintaining and expanding our current raw sugar supply chains.
This is your moment to shape the future. Together, we can make sugarcane the cornerstone of a greener, more prosperous tomorrow. Will you join us?
Commitments
Commitments
Sugarcane growers produce over 30 million tonnes of renewable energy every year. For the first time in our history there is a genuine push from the industry and investors to establish a new bioeconomy in Queensland.
Government must support this push in a significant and meaningful way to ensure Queensland doesn’t fall behind international competitors.
Partnerships
Partnerships
There are many opportunities to modernise and transform Queensland’s sugarcane industry, while simultaneously making Queensland a significant player in Australia’s bioeconomy revolution.
To take advantage of these opportunities the industry needs a successful partnership with the State Government.
Water and Electricity
Water and Electricity
Electricity bills paid by farmers have risen 130% since 2006-07, while irrigators have been excluded from recent price reductions for small business and households.
We need to reduce the cost of power and water to drive productivity and profitability.
Protect Farmland
Protect Farmland
The sugarcane industry can live up to its potential as a central player in Queensland's bioenergy revolution while also delivering our sustainably produced sugar that is in high demand across the world. But to do this we must protect our major asset, our prime agricultural land, from encroachment by urban development and renewable energy projects.
Farmland must be protected, and growers given the opportunity for sustainable expansion to meet the needs of the bioeconomy and our global sugar markets.
