One plant - many products
The complete sugarcane paddock to packet cycle contains multiple steps from the planting of sugarcane through to the exporting of raw sugar crystals to international markets or the refining and packaging of sugar for domestic use.
Although 'raw' sugar is the main product of Australian sugarcane, there are a host of other uses for the plant including bioethanol, molasses, mulch, green electricity and plastics.
CANEGROWERS is a member of the Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia (PIEFA), that was formed through a collaboration between the Australian Government, primary industries organisations and the education sector and is the peak body for food and fibre education in Australia. PIEFA is the one-stop source for educational information and resources to help build knowledge about agriculture, forestry, fisheries and food and fibre within the schools' system, and to create awareness and interest in career pathways in these industries.
CANEGROWERS works closely with PIEFA to develop and promote a range of sugarcane curriculum aligned teaching resources, industry careers and participate in events connecting the sugarcane industry with schools across the country. CANEGROWERS has been a member of PIEFA since 2019.

Throughout this resource, students will have the opportunity to analyse how sugarcane is grown in managed environments, and to consider the management practices used by Australia’s sugarcane growers to support and improve the profitability, productivity, and sustainability of their farms. Students will apply Design Thinking skills as they generate design ideas to solve environmental concerns on farms, and will consider the ways that scientific knowledge is used by the sugarcane industry to improve sustainability along the supply chain.
Teachers can access a downloadable PDF containing answers for the workbook to aid in the marking and assessment of student work.
